I’ve finally finished reading The Alchemist all in one night. I’m kinda late to submit my blog link to my professor but its better late than never. And of course, I wanted to read the whole thing so that I could understand the philosophy of each characters a little deeper.
We were tasked to choose a character in chapter 2 of The Alchemist and discuss his/her philosophy in life. I know this might be a broad character for me to choose but I would definitely pick The Alchemist.
I may not be as wise as him but his philosophies and proverbs are what keeps me reading for more. His character makes Santiago become a little more sane than his usual self from chapter 1.Without The Alchemist being in the book, Santiago wouldn’t have found the treasure he was looking for throughout the whole book and no matter how impatient, irritated or angry he may get, The Alchemist was there to always turn things around. He was a wise, 200 year old man and everything he says made sense. He also stated that he believes more in proverbs, and to my understanding, he was a Christian. There was one quote that has been repeating for a numerous times. He said 'Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.' For as long as you know you love something, there will always be a way to get back to it if you let go, especially if you know that they’re waiting for you.
The Alchemist, like I said, was a wise old man and he believed that the earth has a soul. Everything is connected with each other and that is how his faith became to be. He also said, ‘When something is written, there is no way to change it.’ In easier terms, there are things in life that just can’t be turned into something else. What’s there will always be there but it will always depend on what you do to the present then it will definitely affect your future. The Alchemist’s destiny was to turn lead into gold (at least that’s what I read) and he has fulfilled his destiny by the help of his ancestors. His ancestors who believed in the same philosophy as he does and understand that the Earth has a soul and everything else around him.
I have to admit, I’ve been copying quotes from the book for the whole day. Especially the part when The Alchemist came in. I thought at first that he would be a grumpy, ignorant guy but turns out to be the exact opposite of what I have imagined, even better. If its possible, I would take an opportunity to meet with Paulo Coelho and thank him for the wonderful messages the book had brought to me because it was definitely inspiring and that I could carry on the messages he has shared to the world. It was unlike any other I have read and it made realize how thankful I am to have whatever blessing God has given to me right now.
If someone/something stops you from pursuing your dreams, would you still continue? Yes or No?
A definite YES.
Just recently, people who are very dear to me have told me not to pursue cooking since its a difficult task to do. I say, its not, as long as the longing is still there. In “The Alchemist” (and where I am basically basing this blog post from), there was this quote that was repetitive throughout the book, it said, “and when you want something, the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it”. This might be one of my favorite quotes from now on and the reason is that, dreams, big or small, they’re still someone’s vision of what they want their future to be like. Just like Santiago (from the Alchemist), he almost lost hope of not finding the treasure and in travelling because people around him had opened his mind that there might be nothing waiting for him in the pyramids of Egypt or people will just come and go and if they go, they might have even snatched his wallet along the way. But never the less, throughout everything, he traveled. Yes, there were ups and downs and the journey was certainly rough but that was an adventure he could not trade for anything else.
I’m sure a lot of people have heard that my dream is to one day become a chef and open up my own restaurant, set foot on all seven continents and meet new people of different races.Dreams are easier said that done but once the universe conspires in helping you achieve it, oh, the bliss. Wonder of wonders. Perhaps, its also the journey that made everything else look so impossible.
